Tips for preventing mold in your attic

Mold can be a major problem for homeowners, especially if the problem goes unnoticed and untreated. To prevent any damage from being done to your Washington, D.C., home, Alban Inspections will come in to perform a complete inspection. But there are steps you can take to ensure mold does not build up in your home.

Here are a few tips for preventing mold in your attic:

  • Everything should lead outside: The fans and vents in the rest of your home should pump air and debris directly outside your home instead of the attic. If the air is emptied into the attic, this can lead to moisture which will become a breeding ground for mold. If the ventilation in your home is not correctly set up, this needs to be fixed right away.
  • Proper ventilation: The easiest way to prevent mold from developing in your attic is to make sure that the space has the right amount of ventilation. For every 150 square feet of attic floor space, there should be at least one square foot of ventilation. Before you install any new vents, make sure you inspect the area where it will be placed, to prevent any potential water from leaking in from the outside.
  • Regular inspections: Many individuals tend to ignore their attics unless they need to go up there for storage needs. Once every three months or so you should go up into your attic and look around to make sure that everything is how it should be, with no moisture or other harmful elements building up. By inspecting your attic on a frequent basis you will be able to prevent any costly repairs down the road.
