Getting your house tested

Mold is an issue that no homeowner wants to face. It can lead to extensive house damage, various health issues and, perhaps most importantly, mold is just disgusting. Nobody wants to live in a house where a fungus is slowly taking over. Having a mold inspection done can save you money in the long run.

A study used by the Greenguard Environmental Institute (GEI) says the idea that mold can only grow in moist climates is untrue. The study contains the top ten states who test worst for mold, and among them are Texas (#1), Oklahoma (#3), Nevada (#5) and Arizona (#6). These are states that are known for their drier climates, yet are more susceptible to mold infestations than states with wetter environments. This means no matter where you are living in the United States, your house can become infected with mold.

A 2011 report called Allergies Across America, which was a comprehensive study of allergy testing across the United States, included a list of the five worst cities to suffer from mold allergies. From the least allergic to most, the cities were Los Angeles, San Bernardino, Chicago, Phoenix and Dallas. The study found that these five cities have the highest percentage of people who are sensitive to mold allergies, with around 20 percent of the population of each metro suffering. For comparison's sake, in the least allergic city, Seattle, only 7 percent of its population was afflicted.

But you do not need to have a specific mold allergy to suffer from any health effects that come with exposure. Because mold can grow almost anywhere and on any surface, it is very important to have your home regularly tested for the spongy hazard.
