British communications department: children began to spend more time behind online games

OFCOM – British Communications Department. In 2018, the organization conducted a survey among children and their parents in order to identify the level of media literacy of children – to find out how well they understand the means of communication, which include video games. The other day, OFCOM shared the results of the study.

Two important conclusions can be drawn from the report-now parents are more worried about the online traces of their children, and the children themselves spend more than time for games.

So, it is noted that the number of children playing online is growing. Among young gamers aged 5 to 15 years, three quarters are already familiar with network entertainment. Last year, the indicator was lower – two -thirds.

Significant shift is observed only in children from 12 to 15 years old – they began to play for an hour and a half a week more, and in total the counter for the same period reached 13 hours and 48 minutes.

In each age category, boys gave online games more than 7 days than girls. The older the children, the stronger this gap between the sexes. Boys from 12 to 15 years old spend in network games an average of 16 hours 42 minutes, and girls of the same age – 9 hours 18 minutes.

In addition, 25 % of parents of gum children of 3-4 years are concerned about pressure, which is on their offspring when making intra-game purchases. A year earlier only 16 % of mothers and dads from this category were worried about this. Parents of 12-15-year-old adolescents experience because of this even more often-39 % of those who are not indifferent this year against 30 % in the past.

Among children from 12 to 15 years old, 17 % said that sometimes they spent money online (not only about games) by chance. Last year, this figure was almost half as much – 9 %. Only a fifth of the parents of young gamers of this age turned off the possibility of purchases in applications for smartphones and tablets.

• Children are still faced on the Internet with undesirable content, but most note that they know how to safely use the network.
• Parents of 12-15-year-olds noticed that it is more difficult for their children to control the time spent after the screen. The children themselves from the indicated age category confessed this to this. Nevertheless, the majority still believe that they have reached the balance between such entertainment and other matters.
• Parents about the Internet increase. At the same time, in some other areas of children’s classes, their control was softened.
