Older Windows
Why is it a smart move to replace older windows?
Because a double pane window enhances the window’s ability to
insulate the house. Here’s how: a double-glazed window is one
that includes two layers of glass with a space between the two.
This space is often filled with argon or some other inert gas,
which aids in insulation. Another new feature on windows is
what’s known as low-E coating, a coating which reflects heat and
reduces those nasty ultraviolet rays, which can fade furniture
fabrics and carpets.
Does the homeowner still need convincing? Tell him to check the
U factor of his current windows. The U factor is a measurement
designed by the National Fenestration Rating Council to
determine a window’s tendency to conduct heat. The lower the U
factor, the more insulating the window is. A U factor of .35 or
lower is considered acceptable. |

FEBRUARY 24, 2006 Is Coming Fast!!!
Maryland’s lead-based paint law for rental housing built
before 1978, known as HB 760, requires all dwellings covered
by the law to have satisfied the Risk Reduction Standards by
February 24, 2006. This means that (i) if built before 1950
or (ii) if voluntary registration for a rental property
built between 1950 and 1978 occurred in order to achieve the
limited liability compliance grants, the property must have
been inspected at least one time prior to February 24, 2006.
Please schedule early. The Maryland Department of the
Environment, lead-paint enforcement branch, will be actively
searching for owners or property managers who fail to have
100% compliance. |
