Knowing the proper terminology of the parts of a roof will help you be better informed on maintenance and upgrade projects.

Stair & Step
Safety

Building Codes.  Building codes generally allow a maximum riser of eight and one-quarter inches and a minimum tread width of nine inches

Handrails.  A handrail is required at least one side of the stairwell (usually the right-hand side) with a minimum of 36 inches above the nosing line.

Width.  Travel and furniture movement has much to do with the proper width of stairways. Therefore, heavily trafficked stairways should be at least 36 inches from wall to wall and basement and other types of stairways should be at least 30 inches from wall to wall.

Headroom.  For well-traveled stairways, the minimum vertical height should be six feet eight inches between the nosing line and the ceiling. Six feet four inches is adequate for basements and other less-traveled areas.

Feb1999img3.gif (3575 bytes) How is price determined for a new energy system?

Many factors impact the cost of a new cooling system: equipment efficiency, home size, the presence and condition of ductwork, the need for a thermostat or electronic air cleaner, climate and humidity, the number of windows, insulation, the position of the home, heat-producing appliances, and even the number of people who reside in the home.

Does an outdoor air-conditioning unit need to be covered when it's not being used?

Air conditioners are manufactured to withstand all possible climate changes; therefore they do not need to be covered. Actually, rain helps keep the unit clean! Heat pumps, because they run all year long, should never be covered.
